What is TCPA?
The TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) is the US law that restricts calls made with an autodialer or an artificial or prerecorded voice, including AI voices, without the person’s consent.
Since a February 2024 FCC ruling, calls using AI-generated voices count as artificial-voice calls under the TCPA. Calls to mobile phones generally need prior express consent, and marketing calls need prior express written consent.
Violations can cost $500 per call, or up to $1,500 when willful. This is general information, not legal advice.
